Abstract
(1) L.E. preparation of various techniques has been applied extensively in western
societies and systemic lupus erythematosus is becomming one of the common disease
entities. However it is still considered a rather uncommon disease among Orientals.
Whether this is simply due to the difference in medical practice or if there is some
racial difference would be a subject worthy of investigation.
The authors present four cases of successive S.L.E. among Koreans found, in their
practices over a period of two years. Clinical data as well as laboratory studies
including L.E. preparations are presented.
(2) As to the technical problem of L.E. preparation, the authors compared the
traditional Lee's method, to the Severance method, a modification of Snapper's
technique. The authors pointed out a few disadvantages of the Lee's method and
insisted the superiority of the new method.
(3) With the new method, the authors presented various forms of L.E. cells, and
discussed the mechanism of L.E. cell formation.
(4) Considering the fact that three out of the four cases presented here were clinical
atypical cases detected by only zealous applications of L.E. cell test, the authors
speculated much higher incidence of the disease in Korea than there is thought to be.
